Research and Scholarship

A central goal of the International Centre for Migration and Border Security Studies is to promote global collaboration between ICMBSS members with the aim of advancing the research and scholarship specific to migration and border security studies. This section highlights proposed and ongoing projects with the aim of encouraging collaboration, peer-review, insight, and learning.

Migration

Issues such as immigration control, refugee protection, migration programme integrity, and enforcement are all issues the ICMBSS seeks to support. Central to the vision of the ICMBSS is encouraging its members to undertake research projects collaboratively and internationally such as:


  • How nations identify, arrest detain, and remove unlawful non-citizens from their sovereign borders

​​

  • What technologies can most effectively, efficiently, and economically facilitate the lawful international movement of people while also identifying those who pose a risk to public safety or national security

​​

  • How refugee protection can most aptly be achieved to respect human rights while also ensuring national security and community interests are achieved

Border Security

In addition to the issues specific to migration, the ICMBSS supports research and scholarship specific to the multitude of issues surrounding border security. The ICMBSS seeks its members to encourage in collaborative and international research such as:

  • What are the core competencies border security personnel should possess for a nation to realise an optimised level of border security


  • How can border security personnel most aptly inspect person and goods entering a nation to promote rapid and effective clearance while also effectively detecting smuggled/trafficked weapons, drugs, contraband, as well as people


  • What technologies can most aptly assist border security personnel inspect travellers and goods entering a nation while also supporting law enforcement and national security efforts
